    Injured Dog won't Drink Water
Our 2 year old Jack Russell was hit by a car 2 days ago. We've taken him to a vet who prescribed pain meds and bed rest/TLC. He stopped drinking water today and has not urinated since yesterday. I don't want him to become dehydrated - should I be worried?
P.S. It hurts for him to go to the bathroom as his back legs are injured... could he possibly be not drinking water to avoid going to the bathroom?

    Thank you

Have you seen the vet since that first day? Have you spoken with the vet since he stopped drinking water? Did the vet say anything to you about internal injuries or tell you to check his gums?

Sweetheart, you really need to call the vet right now. His not drinking water is not good. Yes, he can become dehydrated. The vet may feel it is wise to put him on an IV drip and keep him under observation. But, you won't know any of this stuff until you call the vet and speak with him. Please do it now.

I doubt the dog connects drinking and urinating. The vet's initial examination may not have turned up all the internal injuries. It is time to take him back. Vets sometimes leave more aggressive (more expensive) treatments go until they are sure they are needed.

Thank you for your advice. I have a call in to the vet now. He did eat several ice cubes but I don't believe this is enough. I really appreciate your reply

You are right, the ice cubes aren't enough. I am so sorry you are going through this. And I am so sorry that your dog is in such distress. I hope the vet calls you back immediately. If not, call again. "The squeaky wheel get the oil."

Please let us know how he is doing later when you get a chance. It is always upsetting when we hear stuff like this and then we are left wondering about the outcome.

Wishing you only the best, and a healthy recovery for your dog,.

Keep up the ice cubes. I am sorry I didn't think to suggest them. I think it is an acquired taste, but many dogs are crazy about them.
