I have a pink saphire and diamond ring there are 7 diamonds set on each shoulder of the ring. I wear the ring infrequently but tend to wear it for several weeks when I do put it on. Having had the ring for just over 12 months a diamond fell out and was lost. I took the ring back to the jewler who charged me Â£100.00 to put another diamond in. Again I wore the ring infrequently (probably 3 times for short periods) over the next 6 months when another diamond fell out and was lost, I thought it was the same stone, but the jewler said it wasn't and charged me Â£70.00 for a replacement stone. Having had the ring back for approximately 8 months and only wearing it once for a period of 4 weeks another diamond fell out and was lost,this was a different stone as it fell out from the opposite shoulder. I intend to take it back to the jewler. Can anyone tell me if this is normal for diamond rings? Whilst I do have a number of rings with diamonds in them I have never encountered this problem with any other ring. Is it possibly there is a fault with the ring or the jewlers work? Do I have any right to insist the jewler replace the diamond free, should I insist the jewler replace the diamond free of charge?

Why don't you have all of the diamond 'posts' checked to make sure they are all tight. This is obviously a fault in the (the gold may be too soft to hold the diamonds) assembling and design of the ring. The jeweller you have been using, is he the one who sold you the ring in the first place? If so, I would insist on a 'free service' this time, but have all the posts checked. Sounds like shoddy workmanship. They must be diamond chips to be so low in price.

No it isn't normal for any ring made with precious stones. I have never lost a diamond or any other kind of stone from any of my rings. They are insured immediately I start wearing them anyway. So if something was lost it would be covered.

Hi Annie,
Now, I'm not really sure how much I can help you being from the United States, but I'll try my best. I have been in the jewelry industry for about 5 years now, and I love my job! Pink Sapphires are my FAVORITE. They're so beautiful... Down to business, There is a setting for diamonds called a pave setting and this is a setting where little to no gold is holding the diamond in (no prongs). This setting is VERY delicate and stones tend to pop out of them very easily with little to no tension. There are a few things you can do to keep this from happening. 1.) Not wearing a pave setting diamond ring to bed, bath, cleaning, working, gardening, ESPECIALLY SWIMMING. There are many different chemicals that actually eat gold, which could be causing your stones to fall out, bleach and chlorine being two of the major ones. Also, if you wear the ring to bed, gold can become snagged on your bed sheets and the stone can easily fall out. And... 2.) If you do come in contact with these chemicals, be sure to get your ring professionally cleaned asap. I'm not so sure if you can convince the jeweler to replace the diamond for free, but you may be able to exchange the ring if it is still within the "return time", or convince the jeweler to help build up the diamond settings with more gold to inhibit further stone loss... don't feel like you're alone in this. I've seen this TONS of times. I hope this was helpful!

Thanks for your message, and yes it was really useful, I was not aware of the settings you describe, but can see now how the problems I have had may have arisen. Like you I don't think the jewler will replace the latest diamond foc, but I will certainly discuss with him the setting and hopefully have this altered in the way you suggest.

Thanks for your answer, just to confirm the diamonds referred to are small bagget diamonds inlaid in to the shoulders of the ring, perhaps the reason for what you describe as the low price!! But I do tend to agree with you that the settings and the workmanship may not be up to standard and will be discussing with my jewler.
