Is it a HIPPAA violation to email a patient name only without any identifiers; such as date of birth of SS#, or study/procedure type to another co-worker using Microsoft Outlook?

Why are you sending their name to someone else ?

I will assume you work in the health care field, as long as the other employee has a right to know that person is being treated, and has a reason to know the name.

But if you share their name with someone who has nothing to do with their treatment, the firm you work for could well view it as a violation.
