What happened to my pine tree?
I was wondering if someone could tell me what could have, what looks like , tore away near the bottom of my pine tree on the bark. This happened in one night. There is a pile of broken up bark and some is a pile of sawdust lying at the bottom of the tree. This is right about at the knee level of the tree that this took place and it goes into the tree quite deep. There is no sign of any insects, worms or anything anywhere around the site. There are holes bored into and around the site. The actual site is probably 1 1/2 ft. long by 1ft. Wide. The holes seem to be connected somehow inside the tree because my husband sprayed the hose into one of the holes and the water would come out of either another hole or several other holes. Now I found a brown thing stuck on the bark of the tree. It's about 2" in diameter. It's stuck with a clear substance adhering it to the tree. The part that sticks the farthest out looks like a bunch of bristles from a brush all bunched together and the whole thing is soft. What is it? And what did that to the bottom of the tree?
