All I can say is; if a real war starts, God help us all
Without America leading the effort ,the western world is basically neutered . Yet you still say the US should bring our military down to western standards.
Not much happening here. The President has gone so far as to ignore even the basic provisions of the 'War Powers Act';even though he cited the Act as the legal basis of his ability to conduct military activities . He was supposed to obtain Congressional authorization 60 days after he took America into war... oops I mean “time-limited, scope-limited kinetic military action.”
He says that he doesn't need their approval because of the limited scope of US participation ,and that it is a NATO led operation. I don't see his case . The Act doesn't mention either scope of operation or only wars that the US leads . The US is probably lending very critical and valuable logistic and intel to the effort.
He did "send a letter " to Congress asking for a declaration of approval . That has not come .The 60 days has expired . He is now in violation of the law.
The left which went nuts protesting the Iraq war has barely been heard from.
The War Powers Act itself is worthy of it's own posting . There are justifiable reasons for both sides of the aisle to believe the Act was an over-reaction to the Vietnam war and is unconstitutional .From my perspective it allows Congress to veto executive action by inaction rather than by resolution . Others say the act is unconstitutional because it allows for executive action up to 60 days without Congressional approval.
President-elect Obama met with a bi-partisan commission that proposed to Congress "the War Powers Consultation Act of 2009" which would update the 1973 act and eliminate many of the objections . Evidently the President found the act convenient once in office because he has not done a thing to support the revisions.
Suffice it to say that for now it is the law of the land ,and the President is in violation of the law.
