The mortgage department of the company is selling two Model homes that are located on the same block. The square footage, as well as the type of model, determines the cost of these homes.

    a) The second home has 600 square feet more than the square footage of the first home. Write an equation that illustrates this situation using x and y to denote home #1 (x) and home #2 (y), respectively.

    b) Together, both homes have 6,000 square feet. Write an equation that illustrates this situation using the variables you used in part a.

    c) Use substitution to determine the square footage of each house. Describe and demonstrate the process you used to arrive at your answer. Be sure to include the 'check" step.

    a) First statement gives you one equation. But let's assign variables first.

Let x be the square footage of the first home,
Let y be the square footage of the second home.

    From that, you see that x = y + 600

(in other words, you need to add 600 to y so that they both have the same square footage.)

Oh, I didn't read the second line... but no worries, it fits well with the variables I put :D

    b) This one again gives you another equation that illustrates the first statement given in this part. Can you try this out?

    c) Do part b first and if you can start this part as well, it's even better! :)
