Can a landlord turn off your utilities
My utilities are in my landlord's name. We agreed that I would pay him but this month I run into some problems and had to get assitance from a agency. The bill was due on May 2nd, this is May 4th and he turn them off today. I have the money for them, but he shut them off and close the accontant. IS THIS LEGAL. I JUST WENT TO THE STORE AND BROUGHT FOOD FOR THE MONTH

Typically no, they can't simply turn them off, particularly that soon... but it can lead to an eviction for breach of lease when owed moneys aren't paid on time. But that has a specific process that has to be followed. And takes at a minimum of 30 days most places.

If they were smart they would have required the tenants get them in their own names because its less for them to have to deal with.

What state do you reside. Exact rights and laws vary. Section 8 housing has its own sets of rules if it applies.

Is there any reason you can not open your own new accounts with each utility company? Is this a home or business and what was written in your lease about utilities?

First, any question on law needs to include your general locale as laws vary by area.

Most areas do prohibit landlords from shutting off utilities. This constitutes an illegal eviction and may open the landlord to a law suit.
