What licenses and or permits do I need to start a painting business in Maryland? Is a home improvement license needed for only painting? I already have an LLC set up. I just need to know what other permits and licenses I need. I keep getting shuffled around and can't get a straight answer from anyone. Some say I need a only a construction license from the circuit court and some say I need a Home Improvement license.

Inquiring about what licenses you need is a LEGAL question... Bureaucrats absolutely, and positively, are NOT the ones to ask about your legal affairs. In fact, I'm sure that every clerk you talk to, has been instructed to tell every inquirer that he definitely, absolutely needs the particular license that bureau is peddling, whether he ACTUALLY needs it or not...

Therefore, you need to ask somebody who knows, and is on your side... In terms of licenses, a CPA would be the person to ask... In fact, I'd HIRE him.. Not only can he tell you which licenses you need, he can set up your books correctly from the git go. If you shop, I'm sure you can find one who is willing to make his money doing your taxes down the road and won't charge you an arm and a leg to help you get setup..
