Sorry Brain but more and better pics may help. I can't hardly see what's going on in this pic. What kind of pipe material is that, what is it buried in, where is the trap?

Im with ballengerb on this. Can't really make it out, but it looks like it may be part of the trap that has the hole, and that part hooks directly into a cast iron hub? If so you can either break up a little more concrete and dig more dirt so you can cut the hub off and use a shielded adapter clamp to connect from the cast to pvc. Then install new trap and riser. Or you could drill out the lead that is holding the pipe in the hub and remove the pipe, then use a fernco donut to install a new pvc trap, but it looks like you may be limited on room for your rough in to work for this. You may have to build your own trap with street ninetys, so the street end will go into the donut(or bushing) in the hub. Let us know how things work out.

That is a cast iron p trap because they make a really tight u shape. U need to dig lower where the vertical piece of pipe is.
U would need to cut behind the hub downstream of drain or if u could cut in between the hole on the pipe and hub so u could have something to grab on with new transitional band from cast iron to plastic. Or continue with cast iron which is more difficult to work with for a novice.
Try and be as center as existing drain.
