I always though pretty was for females.

... but what's your question any ways?

I'm wondering what your question is too.

Pretty is usually how we refer to females. Handsome is what we use for males.

They can call themselves pretty if they want to, there is no actual law on it, but from more proper speech, pretty is for female, and handsome is for men

To be fair, you can use the word pretty pertaining to men. For instance, you could say "You're pretty....annoying". ;)

Okay, that was my attempt at humor. There's a reason I'm not the comedy expert. :(

My main expertise is in pets, but I have many other expertise. Like any other member of this site I can answer any question that I have the answer to, not just pet questions. :)

Boys with feminine features like high cheekbones, fair complexions, long eyelashes, rosy cheeks, etc, are often referred to as "pretty".

"Pretty boy" has a negative connotation, though. If anyone has attractive features, but I don't want to offend by using a gendered term, I'd stick with "good-looking" or even "beautiful" (though beautiful is more female gendered than not).

Like southy said, "pretty" for a guy is a put-down. I wouldn't use it.

My son is navigating the fallout of a lot of girls at school telling him he has "pretty" or "gorgeous" or "beautiful" eyes. Truth is - he has remarkably nice eyes - piercing blue, like Paul Newman. People comment on it at school so often though, it's become a constant source of joking and teasing. Even his tennis coach will say to him, "hey, blue eyes, keep those beautiful peepers on the ball", and guys jokingly asked him to homecoming, or will say, "wow, you are really pretty today" to him in the hall.

Fortunately, my son is very confident, has a ton of friends, nobody truly questions his sexuality as he's pretty obviously straight and he is generally a good looking, athletic kid who nobody messes with in an serious way. He can take the joke, and will just respond, "why, thank you - lovely of you to say so", or when the boy asked him to homecoming he had a quick retort, "I'd love to go with you, but your dad asked me first" which got a big laugh.

If my son were any less popular, less confident, less sure of his sexuality, less accepted though - I think the attention he's gotten from being told his eyes are "pretty" would really be harassment and bullying. His dean has already asked me if I wanted to file a bullying complaint and I was able to tell him my son really isn't bothered - he finds it funny and knows it's all joking. It would not be funny though if I had a son who was struggling to accept homosexuality, was transgender, or was neither but was accused of being one or the other.

So, yeah - it's possible for a boy or man to be pretty, but I wouldn't use that word... it can really be hurtful.
