Our family (myself, wife and two boys) going on a trip starting in Boston and traveling down to DC. We have a week there and really want to use this as an opportunity to learn about American revolutionary history. Any books or things to do while on our trip would be great. Thanks in advance.

If you're flying to Logan, it should be pretty easy to find a travel book.

My recommendation for one full day downtown:

Go to Faneuil Hall / Quincy market for some touring and lunch, then hop over to the North End to see the Paul Revere house, the old north church, etc. and to eat dinner. Most of the italian food off Hanover St. is fantastic (strega is my favorite). If you have room for dessert, Mike's Pastries is pretty famous for their cannolis.

Also, the USS Constitution is right there. It's not Revolutionary War era, but it's a lot of fun.

You can also drive north on Massachusetts Ave all the way through Lexington and Concord (Paul Revere's ride), see old architecture as you get further out, and finally are in farmlands that look the same as they did 300 years ago. The 'rude bridge that arched the flood' is there, and a museum, and it won't be crowded yet.

Harvard Square has brass horseshoes in the sidewalks that show the route Revere took there, and Harvard is a historical spot in itself, but parking is impossible, as it is in Boston. You could walk around Boston, hop on the subway to Harvard, and rent a car from there.

I don't know of any books, sorry. There used to be a museum with gift shop and books in the old Boston State House, a tiny building downtown, but I think it closed for lack of funding.
