NJ residence worked remotely for a company in Omaha on 1099?
    Hi All,

    1. I lived in NJ from Jan 2010 --> Jun 2010 and found a remote job for 2 months only, working from home for an employer who is in Philadelphia, PA on 1099. The 1099 shows the company address as Omaha, NE and the total amount I was paid was $4,000 (4 thousands only).

    2. In July 2010 I moved to Washington State for a full time job and earned full time income in excess of $50,000 for the rest of the year in Washington State.

I was able to finish my Federal taxes, by filing Schedule C and SE tax in addition. This had little to do with where I lived so I was able to complete it.

Now the problem is state taxes. In WA there is no state income tax (yay!). But what about the 2 months I worked in NJ (remotely) for a company in Philadelphia, PA. The actual check came from Omaha, NE and total income on contract 1099 was $4,000

Do I file for State Taxes in NJ? Philadelphia, PA? Omaha, NE?

    Thanks!

    Steve

Since you lived and worked in NJ you pay tax to NJ for the W2 income. You file a part-year resident return and report all the income you earned from January through to the date you moved out of state.

I assume you mean 1099 not w2 as during my nj residence I only had 1099 income.

Yes - sorry for the confusion. Your income was 1099 income while living in NJ, so that's what you report to them for the period when you lived there.
