    Ground water or sewer
I dug a hole for a sump 12" from our main sewer line which is cast iron. The whole is 24" from the exterior foundation wall. We often get water on the cellar floor this time of year. When digging about 4" down I got seeping water. It was odorless. Over 24 hrs we got 5" of water in the sump I dug. I had a plumber come and he said the water was ground water, which I'm incomes to believe. I'm wondering though if it could be sewer even if it did not smell? Is there a way I can test the water and should I bother? The sump is now gradually filling--not even enough for my pump to kick on (less than 3 gal in 12 hrs). Thanks

If your worried about it you can have a plumber come out and scope the sewer line for breaks. They can use a small video assmbly and run it down the line.

    Hi FF3...

I get ground water when I dig out for sump pumps all the time... ;)

I wouldn't worry about it at all...

Yep, just shows you made the right choice by putting in a sump pump.
