If your fan is adaptable, many older ones are not or don't have space, get a universal remote at Hd or Lowe's or a fan store. It's a tight fit sometimes but the receiver fits up under the top cover at the ceiling. The hot ceiling lead goes to the hot or black on the receiver, the white to the fan, the ground to the frame and then the receiver output is wired per the instructions. You will have to leave the pull chains on and control from remote. This may or may not work depending on age, brand and model.
