Are the new kitchen counter-top refinishing kits sold at HI stores worth it? Durable?

I have been noticing refinishing kits sold at places like Home Depot, etc. These kits run approx. $200-300, so still pricey. Does anyone have any other ideas. My kitchen desperately needs a facelift but I'm not ready to invest a lot right now. I am very open to all types of ideas.
I wold like to lay a few feature tiles on top of wall tiles just laid. Possible?

I have just had a kitchen renovation completed and am not happy with the tiles surrounding my stove top. I would like to 'improve' it by adding a few feature tiles on the top. It looks great, but I am not sure if tile can be laid on tile.

I am renovating a bathroom and want to change the tiles in the shower. I was wondering if I could install the new tiles overtop the existing tiles to avoid destroying the wall and what steps to follow if this can be done. The existing tile is in great shape but not the desired colour.
