Can psychiatric problem cause deep sleep like condition like in stupor?
My mom has been suffering from deep sleep like syndrome from last 9 months. She had almost 7 deep sleep like attacks where she responds very little ( like open her mouth when a spoon of food or water is kept and she is asked repeatedly to take it) and this symptoms continues for 4-5 days. Then she regains her consciousness and orientation very slowly over next 5-6 days. Brain scans have been done, possibility of hepatic encephalopathy was tested, nothing has been confirmed. My mom has been suffering from psychiatric problem for the last 25 years. When she suffers, she remains angry, talks and rebukes everyone a lot, sleep for very less. She had sunprizing and lithosun for at least 8 years as prescribed by a psychiatrist( not continuously though, for 2 months at a stretch max.) After that she was taking some other medication prescribed by other psychiatrist, namely chlorpromazine and one other. This went for another 12 years or more, but again not continuous, 1-2 months in a year whenever that problem arose. She is now going through this deep sleep like syndrome. Please help.

It seems unlikely that the symptoms/behaviors (deep-sleep) you describe are caused by an underlying psychiatric condition. That doesn't mean however that there isn't an association or relationship. It could, and should be suspected, that both may be traceable to a common disorder, particularly an organic brain disorder.

Certainly not a diagnosis. Just an entry suspicion based on the limited information provided.

    What was the psychiatric diagnosis(es)?
