Notwithstanding the moral issue of paying back one's debts. I am a native Canadian who left Canada to start a new career in a country in the EU of which I also have citizenship in. One of the compelling reasons to leave Canada and to start fresh was to escape my crippling debt brought on by divorce (no alimony and no child support payments here as it was a childless marriage). I left Canada (Ontario) in 2006 leaving approximately $50K in personal credit card and loan debt across 3 different banks. I took all of my financial assets and only left a Locked In Retirement Account in Ontario of which I cannot access until I am 65. For now the Statute of Limitations for filing a legal claim against me in Ontario has expired in 2008. I realize that collection agencies in Canada can harass me to pay indefinitely but from what I undersatnd they can no longer pursue me in court. However can the Canadian banks sell the debt to a European Debt collector and pursue me in Europe after more than 4 years? I can handle harassing phone calls... my concern is if the European Debt Collector buys the debt from Canada, can the European Country pursue me in courts legally and garnishee my wages even if the SOL in Ontario has expired?
