The story starts with a young woman sitting on a bench in the middle of town waiting for her lover/boyfriend. He doesn't show up and she continues to sit there even after it starts to snow. She falls asleep in the snow and becomes very ill. When found she is taken to the hospital and discovers that she's pregnant. When the lover/boyfriend looks her up months later, he discovers her pregnant and wants to be with her. She won't trust him.

I know it is a small town. It might have been in New England. I'm not sure of the character names. I believe he was in the military.
