Getting sued for a bill 12 years old
I received a letter from a lawyer telling me I owe 1,678.23 for bills from 1998. I called the law office and asked for the phone number for NCO financal to make sure these are in fact my bills. The lady told me NCO got it from the hospital. Then they got a laywer named Zimmerman, who then sold/gave it to them. I called NCO they think zimmerman still has it. I was told there was a judgement against me for this, from 98. I called the courts superior 6. They told me to write the judge a letter, since it has been so long. Should I ask for a dismissal. What should the letter say exactly. Half of the bill isn't even mine but my ex-husbands, but they said they can't find him. So I am resposible for the full amount plus interest.I live in Indiana.

First put the phone down, that is not legal proof of anything, and all you do is actually give them more info on you.

Write them a letter denying the debt, and ask them to provide proof of the debt.

Hello, I had a similar situation where there was a bill for myself and my mate, however the collection agency only went after me as they claimed they didn't know where my mate worked. At any rate, I ended up paying the debt in full, however since it was a judgement against myself and my mate he received credit as if he assisted in satisfying the debt.

You can do a few things, get a copy of the debt review it and see if its accurate and then notify the bill collector assume responsibility for your part and provide them with your ex's information and address, so you won't be responsible for the full debt.

In my case they lied and knew where my mate was but since he was already being garnished by IRS they couldn't get anything from me. Also check the statute of limitation in your state. Lastly, they may take a deal, since the bill is so old where they will send you a generic letter stating "tax time", final offer where they are cutting the bill in half... But there is a lot of bogus collection agencies out there. Good Luck to you...
