I bought a Universal Tub Spout with Diverter. The instructions say the copper pipe should not protrude more than 2 inches from the finished wall. I hesitate to cut the excess off, which is almost a full inch in case this doesn't work, and may have to go another route, call a plumber, and he'll need more pipe to work with. Can this Universal Tub Spout work with 7/8th's of an inch more pipe than what is called for in the instructions?

Yes, as long as the spout slides all the way on up flush to the wall without having to force it, it will be just fine.

Hi guys...

You can certainly try what MGD77 suggested, but if it was me doing the job and the instructions say to have the pipe no longer than 2" then I'd cut the pipe so it is no longer than 2". Heck, I'd even cut it down to 1-7/8" to be sure. If the pipe is cut down and this doesn't work then the plumber will still have plenty of pipe to work with... only needs an inch or so. Be clear, however, this should work problem free!

I'd then take a metal file and lightly debur the end of the pipe. Take a little silicone grease and grease the end of the pipe and the ORING inside the universal spout and then twist the spout back and forth as you push it into place. Don't forget to caulk the pipe hole in the wall if that hasn't been done either... ;) Secure the allen screw and you should be all set.

Do as suggested, let us know how you make out...

I agree, if you are going to be a DIYer and you have instructions you should follow them. If you have to call a plumber he will be just fine with 2". Marks nailed it with deburring and plumbers grease. I am waiting for the patent on a Sharkbite spout that just slips on with no sewt screw
