    Theft Under $5000/Fraud - Canada
    Hello,

I made some very stupid choices and decided to steal from my employer. I credited myself the money on my credit card over a period of about 4 months. The total amount is about $1600. I'm 23 years old and have never been in trouble with the law my entire life. I've been having personal problems and this is what ultimately drove me to do this stupid thing.

I have to go for fingerprinting next week and have a court date in March. Does anyone here have any idea what could happen? I live in British Columbia Canada and I just read this: http://www.llbc.leg.bc.ca/public/pubdocs/bcdocs/377792/theft974.pdf

    On page 8 it states:

"If you are found guilty of stealing from your employer
and you were in a position of trust (for example, if you
were a bookkeeper or a cashier), the judge will treat the
matter very seriously. You may get a jail term even if you
stole only a small amount and have no criminal record."

Although the officer that spoke to me said that I will not go to jail, I am still very worried. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you

First rule, if you are a criminal the police officer is not your friend, not your buddy, and they will and are allowed to lie to you to get you to confess. They can tell you, nothing will happen, they can tell you to merely write it all down and you can go home. They can tell you they have a list of evidence they don't have.

First issue, are they treating this like ONE theft, or several, will there be one charge for several charges.

Are you in a position to pay the store back.

Most likely you will get a large fine, have to pay back all the money stolen and be on probation. But that is just a guess

Thanks for your reply. I am not sure if they are treating it as one theft or several yet. I forgot to mention that they took a written statement from me as well. I would be able to pay back but probably not right away.

Does anyone else have any input? I would greatly appreciate it. I'm losing my mind here.
