The first step, if you haven't already done so, is to try and determine when you are most likely ovulating. There are several means of doing so. Also be sure to make any healthy changes that you can... eat well, avoid cigarette smoke and alcohol, start on a prenatal or multivitamin, etc.. Your husband should also do what he can to insure good health.

Once you have determined when you are most likely ovulating, best to start having sex several days before and right through to a day or two after suspected ovulation. While an egg is only viable for about 24 hours once released, the conditions within the vagina and uterus just prior to ovulation allow most sperm to survive for about 2-3 days. A few hardy souls can live a bit longer.

Having sex several times just prior to ovulation gives the best odds of having sperm ready and waiting for an egg. Continuing with sex for 2-3 days after suspected ovulation allows a bit for an off calculation.

If cycles are irregular, or you have trouble figuring out ovulation (the online calculators only give you a starting place and are not an exact science), you can try having sex every couple of days throughout each cycle if possible, with perhaps a few extra sessions about the time you think you might be close to ovulation.

It is important to remember that even with good timing, pregnancy can still take some time to achieve, so try not to get too discouraged if it still takes awhile. Most couples will become pregnant within a year of actively trying, but it can still take a bit longer for others.
