    Mirena IUD
I have had the mirena IUD for 2 years. I have always had my period since I have had the IUD until recently. I haven't had my period in almost 2 months. I have tried to check my strings 4 times and I have no luck finding them. I have been throwing up for no reason. Could I be pregnant? And should I be worried? Do I need to call and make a dr's appointment?

I've had a Mirena, and it's really common to stop having menstrual bleeding on it. It can really vary in how long it takes for bleeding to stop, but most women do stop. You really should be able to feel the strings especially if you could feel them before. I would definitely want to get this checked out. You could get a pregnancy test at the same time just to be sure.

You are right is very common to stop bleeding which is great! The thing that worries me is that I can't find my strings. I have done a lot of reading online and a lot of people say that when you take a pregnancy test with the IUD that it will always come up negative because of the hormones in the IUD.

    Pregnancy is absolutely a possibility.

Take a pregnancy test since it is possible you are experiencing pregnancy symptoms.

Is it true that if you have the IUD that your pregnancy test will show up negative even if you are pregnant because of the hormones in the IUD?

No, it's not necessarily true. The IUD does not produce the same hormone as pregnancy... Hcg.

A pregnancy test measure human chorionic growth hormone that is made when there is a pregnancy. The Mirena contains progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. Progesterone will increase during a pregnancy; the ovaries make it during the first trimester and then the placenta takes over for the rest of the pregnancy. Pregnancy isn't measured by the progesterone numbers, though. They look strictly at HCG numbers. Less than 5 means no pregnancy. The number rises very quickly as the pregnancy progresses.

Since you can't find the string, that's worth a visit to a doctor. They might want to do an ultrasound and figure out what's going on. If I was concerned about pregnancy, I would probably take a home pregnancy test before the visit, though. You can get a false negative on HPTs (meaning you tested too soon) but they don't give false positives, so if you are pregnant you can know right away.

I'm sure this is very stressful for you and hope you will update us when you get an answer. Hang in there!
