    Why does my pull string on lawn mower kick back and nearly breaks my hand?

    Sounds like you may have hit a rock or tree root and sheared the woodruf key on the flywheel, and it slipped time.

    I agree with smoothy. That has happened to me before and it was indeed the key on the flywheel.
