Voluntary Relinquishment of Rights & Responsibility for a joint step parent adoption.
"I was previously married for 7yrs and I had two children. We divorced 5 years ago, and I have not seen the children. I have paid all child support on time and owe nothing backed. I recently lost my job and had to look into a modification of child support. We have not spoken to eachother in 5yrs (ex wife or children). This made her very angry at first, but, then her husband of 4 yrs now showed interest in adopting the minor children. She approached me about this, and we all decided it was in the best intrest of the children. I have voluntarily relinquished my rights and responsibilities in order for them to persue the step parent adoption. I have agreed to give $ to be put in a trust for their college (one time lump sum). I am wondering how long this will take to finalize if all parties are in agreement. I reside in florida."

It will take as long as it takes to get a court date, once all the paper work is filed and a date is requested. 4 to 6 months may not be uncommon, how long has it been now ?

I signed my rights on 11/29/10, the joint stipulation was filed and approved on 12/3/10. Per the stipulation they had 15 days to file the petition for adoption w/ info afitdavid and following that the Final Judgement for adoption, I believe it all went together. So, to avoid being in contempt of court they have until 12/18 to have filed it. So it could be another 3-6 months for them to set a court date? Will there be two hearings one for petition, and one for final judgement? I was advised that often at the hearing for petition if they have all necessary paperwork (i.e. Waiver, Stipulation, petition, and the final judgement) they have often signed it then. I don't begrudge them their due support, but, there is a large sum of money on hold in the lawyers trust, for them and I have to pay on that, and the support. The support will not discontinue until they have finalized the judgement. This is my concern.
