    Self repair of heater
I have a heater that is 45 years old. It is a hot water heating system fueled by gas. The name on the heater is Federal Boiler and some part says Bell & Gossett. It hasn't been working exactly right - I don't think the circulator has been working, but, I still had some heat. The pilot is lit, and you would hear a poof sound when the heater turned on. If the heater did not go on, I tapped the pipe and the gas would kick in and the heater would turn on. Now, it's dead and the house is cold. Can you please tell me anything I might be able to do to fix it myself? Or some pointers. I know I need a new heater, but, it isn't in the budget, and I need heat. Thank you!
