Honey, there is nothing to be scared of. We have all had our first bra at one time or another.
What are you scared of?

How old are you?
Why would people laugh? All women wear bras.

Well I've never had my first bra (Hopefully I never will ;)) but, sally, there is nothing to be scared of. I'm sure your mom decided to get you a bra because she noticed you're starting to develop. It's a perfectly natural part of growing up. Most girls are anxious to get their first bras, my daughter was.
It may be possible that some immature boys will laugh, but they should be ignored anyway.

To add to what Scott said, if you are starting to mature and you are not wearing a bra more people will be laughing.

Way back when, my best friend and I were suffering from moms with 2 different theories about bras: mine made me wear a stupid old pointy one of hers, that just caused wrinkles on my flat chest, and my friend's mom wouldn't let her wear one until she was 16, even though she really needed one. So there we were in school, me hunched over to hide the wrinkled bra and she hunched over to hide her unfettered breasts.
It's easy to say 'talk to your mom' but of course it isn't so easy to do that if mom isn't the talking type. You might want to check out what stores are selling these days, including the totally soft ones that have no shape, if you are just starting to develop. Wish those had existed 50 years ago!

My daughter just turned 10 a few months ago and we needed to buy her first bra a little earlier than that. She was very scared too. She was afraid that other kids would notice it and make fun of her. But I explained to her that her body was starting to change and if she didn't start wearing a bra very soon then it would be noticeable and kids might make fun of her for that. We shopped around and tried on a few different kinds and we found a style that was comfortable for her, smoothed her out and wasn't noticeable. It's kind of like a sports bra. At first she hated wearing it and would take it off as soon as she got home. But she got used to it very quickly and now she hardly remembers it's there. Nobody has noticed it and now she admits that she'd rather wear it then take a chance on not wearing it and having kids notice her changed body.

I would venture to say a significant number of women have problems with bras. Bodies are different. Girls develop differently and bras have to be mass produced. So its sometimes difficult to get them to fit well.

Do you know how to fit yourself with a bra? The Internet is full of articles on how to do it, but here's an easy-to-understand one --
How to Find the Perfect Fit in a Bra | eHow.com
Some stores have official fitters who will measure you and help you find a bra that fits right. Or you can do this yourself, if you first educate yourself. Get your hands on a tape measure plus paper and a pencil, follow the instructions, and you're good to go!
