OK, call it a hate crime. Whatever you call it it's not the price of fame, that's going too far.

I don't feel it is going too far. Sorry you don't agree.
Among a number of things that have happened, a Nutty Mcnutjob sent a hate letter filled with talcum powder to Bristol Palin. You want to call it a hate crime? That's okay with me. Other reality TV stars deal with hate mail and threats all the time, as well as love letters and all the stuff I mentioned above. If the Palins had settled back down into their normal lives in Alaska after the 2008 election, none of this garbage would have happened. Bristol would have just been one of many unwed mothers in the U.S. So for her and her family, all the negative (as well as positive) attention IS the price they are paying for their desire to be in the limelight. I am not saying I believe she should be treated that way. She shouldn't. No one should (except maybe that douche Spencer Pratt). Anyway, it just is what it is In my opinion. Famous people are the prime targets of all sorts of crackpots & fans. I suspect it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

We'll have to agree to disagree, because no one deserves to be stalked, threatened and harassed just because they're in the public eye. Particularly after the anthrax letters, mailing white powder is no joke.

Steve, I think you are misinterpreting what I stated as my tacit agreement that this anti-social behavior is okay. I never said that anyone deserved to be stalked, etc "just because they're in the public eye." I specifically said she shouldn't be treated that way. Of course "mailing white powder is no joke." I never said it was. However, do I consider it a terrorist attack? No. Do I think a person with too many loose screws went too far? Yes. Do I think the person who sent that letter hates Bristol Palin with an irrational passion? You betcha. Do I consider it a hate crime? No, not in the way you appear to feel it is but I won't pick at you if you want to call it that.
I believe when people place themselves in the spotlight non-stop, the loonies come out of the woodwork and anything (good or bad) can happen. It is what I call the price of fame. You don't agree. That's okay. Yes, we can agree to disagree.

I don't agree it is either necessary or right ,or 'the way it is" .
Princess Di was killed by this obsession with celebrity and fame ;so was John Lennon.
There was not this passionate hatred of either ,and still they were stalked until killed .
Sematics aside ,does it really make a difference if John Lennon was shot by a terrorist,by a deranged fan ;or a stalking paparazzo ? It has to be treated seriously

Agreed. She has the option of retreating from the spotlight and take care of her child. That would be a good start.

Yes the liberal position is that women should be barefoot and pregnant cooking dinner.

Really? I grew up in a very conservative Republican family/community and was always given that message.

Liberals dictate who should get choices. Almost from the day Palin bounced onto the national scene the left has said she should go home and take care of her family. They're still saying it today.

Do you ever hear them suggest that would be the right choice for a man ?

Tom, I never stated it is "necessary" or "right". I did state "it is what it is" and if you want to disagree, that is your privilege.
I am not saying this stuff should be ignored. Of course it should be treated seriously!
You have stated in a different way what I have been saying here. You said, Princess Di & John Lennon were "killed by this obsession with celebrity and fame". Along with the regular fan base, you have crazies that will latch onto people who are famous. Unlike your examples of Lennon & Di, Bristol Palin did have the choice to remain out of the spotlight.

Who said that? You continue your habit of mis-representing people's words. If you don't believe that children need a healthy household with two present caring parents then that's your belief, not mine.

Unlike your examples of Lennon & Di, Bristol Palin did have the choice to remain out of the spotlight.
Sure they did . Lennon sought fame his whole life . Reality hit the Beatles after the Shea Stadium concerts . They became so afraid for their personal safety they quit doing concerts.
Di knew fame was part and partial when she married the probably future King of England. She tried to put it to good use .Neither she ,nor Lennon ,nor Bristol have signed up for the treatment...
