    Toilet suddenly started gurgling
I have two toilets on the second floor of my house. Yesterday morning everything was working as usual. I flushed one of the toilets about midday and as the water went down it made a sort of gurgling sucking sound. Also when I turn on the water in the sink in that room it makes a bit of a sputtering noise. Water is clean and clear. Problem continues into today so I tried flushing other toilet on second floor and got the same noise. The toilets flush, the washing machine and shower drain just fine. The septic system isn't due to be pumped. The toilet on the main level doesn't seem to make the same strange noise. I've considered a venting problem but I think the vent is on the roof and my roof has a very steep pitch. Does it seem likely to be a vent problem? Could there be a flap on top of vent that is stuck? To provide all possible info, we do have a well, the pump is in the house, it doesn't seem to be overheating. Also, we have many oak trees and falling leaves. And, I first noticed the problem when cleaning the toilets. I put a half bucket of water in bowl to empty bowl and squirt some cleaner in and go back after a while and scrub and flush. First I thought I might have gotten water level so low that I introduced air into line, but after 24 hours, I would expect that to have resolved. If it is the vent, can you "fix" it from inside the house?

BINGO!! You have a blocked vent and the noise you hear if the system attempting to vent through your traps and toilet. This must be cleared from the roof unless you only have one pipe coming out of the roof.

In that case the vent, or vents, would have to be snaked from the attic. This will require a sewer machine to do this. If heights bother you consider calling in outside help on this one. Good luck, Tom
