Honda Civic 1998 with 140 000km, no idea if the timing belt was changed
    Hi,
I have a Honda Civic 1998, which I bought 2 years ago, there was something like 112 000 km at this point.
I have no idea if the person who sold me the car had changed the timing belt, I had the garage inspected the car in 2008 and they said the timing belt was good.
Does that mean the last owner probably did the timing belt ?
The car have now 140 000 km, so I am guessing if the timing belt was never changed it would have break by now, no ?

Thanks in advance for your help!

It should be replaced every 144,000 km or 6 years, whichever comes first. You are likely overdue on both counts. If it snaps, the pistons will have an astroidic collision with the valves. Cold weather is coming, which is tough on timing belts--you don't want your's to snap on start-up, when your're going to work.

TxGM, do Honda belts have manufacture dates encoded on them? If so, could he remove the V/C and upper timing cover to locate a DOB for the belt?
