    How to Widen an entryway??
Really need your advice on this one please!

My wife wants to widen the entryway leading to a step down porch, which used to be the back door to the house. She wants to widen it from 36-48" but it's a load bearing wall.

She also wants the old back door moulding and threshold to match the oak floor but removing it and replacing that is automatic with the widening right?

Question: What steps are needed to widen the entryway? Do I remove the sheetrock, insert a jack, then re install new studs for bracing and then remove the old ones? Help!

    Welcome norm

    1. Remove door, trim and door jamb.

    2. Remove siding from area to be worked on.

    3. Built temporary wall 2 feet inside of exterior wall in area u will widen.

    4. Cut s/r size of rough opening. S/R at top of opening should be removed.

    5. Cut sheathing size of rough opening.

    6. Remove jack studs, main studs and header.

    7. Install new main studs, header and jack studs. Sheetrock.

    8. Install new door, trim and finish outside siding. Be sure to flash under door sill and set in caulking/silicone.

    Good luck
