Exemption from UK taxes once US taxes are paid.
I am a British citizen living and working in Houston Texas. I have been here for 7months and likelyb to be here for another 4 months. Prior to coming to the states I was again working out of the UK for 5months. I am still on UK payroll paying UK taxes and my employer is paying my US taxes for me on my behalf. I was advised that being away from the UK for >6 months meant that I am automatically classed as a non-resident. I found this out when they started taxing the rent I was receiving on my residence which I rented out once I realised I was going to be out of country for a considerable amount of time. Normally as a UK tax payer taxes would not be charged on rental income until the self assessment has been completed at the end of the tax year. Once I am being treated as a non-resident, does that mean I can claim back my UK taxes I have paid for the duration of my time over-seas?
