    Most noises in the ear (ringing, high pitched sound, etc.) are not serious, just annoying. They are called tinnitus and you can read many websites about it, because it isn't really treatable in any simple way. Most people get some as they age, because the tiny moving parts of the ear harden. You can also get noises because of colds and general head congestion in the sinuses and eustacian tube (ear canal, that drains into the throat). But there's another possibility that even ear specialists won't think of: dental problems. I had an ear in pain for years that turned out to be from a molar nearest my ear.
