Closet ring under the sub floor
So here is the deal I am a new DIYer and have come across something I can't seem to find an answer for.

I live in a home that was built in 1930. The toilet on the main floor of the house was leaking and the tank was cracked so I am trying to replace the whole toilet. I have replaced a toilet in other homes I have owned so this should have been no problem, right. But here is the problem... first off it seems the last person to have my house decided to jbweld the bolts. So I cut them to get the toilet out. When I cleaned off the wax ring I found that the closet ring is under the subflooring. Now without taking up the whole floor I can't seem to figure out how to get a new closet ring in. I really can not afford to redo the flooring at this time. I do plan to do a complete bathroom redo later this year but as I am a single mom of three that just got back to work after a bit of time money is beyond tight. Please someone tell me how to fix this.

You are saying closet ring so I think you mean closet flange. The flange should be flush with the flooring surface or it can be 1/8" higher. If the face of the flange is below the finished floor you use spacers. Approved Vendor 012751 Toilet Flange Spacer Ring

Question: How low is it below the finished floor ?

There is an easy way of reinstalling new toilet:

    1. You do not install new closet ring over existing one
    2. Buy "Remodeling brass bolts" ( 3 1/2" long )
    3. Insert bolts into closet ring slots
    4. Buy Oatey's closet ring spacer kit and install as many of the spacers as you need
    5. Put wax ring over the spacers
    6. Set toilet
    7. Tighten nuts
    8. Cut of left over length of bolts
    9. Caulk around the base of the bowl

    And you are finished.

Let me know how you did... Milo

I removed the old bent up ring which was not screwed into the floor. Our toilet has been leaking gases, wobbling, and sliding in all directions. We live in the desert and when it heats up the gases flow into the house. I have gotten as far as fitting the new ring into it's spot but I do not see...

First of all, great forum! I am installing a new toilet, but the floor has been built up over the years- two different times with 3/4 inch plywood panels. The original flange was never raised when this was done. I stand about 6'4" tall and my aim has gotten pretty good over the years, but as I age,...
