1997 ford escort rough idle, very low on horsepower
Was driving home from work on interstate 70-75mph, was running fine. About 1/2 a mile after exiting, the car slowly lost power. If I tried to advance the throttle past about 50%, the engine would die. Its top speed is about 20mph and takes about 2 minutes to get there. It idles very rough. While idling, I removed the fuel injector plugs one at a time; each cylinder reacted the same and when each was unplugged made the engine run noticeably worse. There's plenty of flow from the tailpipe, so I don't think it's the converter... I was hoping this sounded familiar to someone... Thank you in advance!

. Replace the platinum spark plugs with the same Motorcraft plugs that came in the car, if they have not been changed in 50,000 miles.

    . Replace the coil pack.

Yes, the DTC's are: P1401, P1132, P0756 & P0172. The codes were read with the engine cold, not running, with the key in the "ON" position.

The NKG plugs have less than 1k miles, but I'll swap them out for the MCs. If that coil pack is $100 or less, I'll throw it on. The car won't even fire now, after I changed some bad vacuum lines...

Coil & plugs didn't fix. Checked & have spark. Old plugs smelled of gas but weren't wet. Engine sounds OK when cranking, but will check compression in the morning. Anything else I should check? Thanks.

For P1401, check/replace the DPFE Sensor, located between the firewall and the engine. Look to two short sections of neoprene tubing.

Compression good: 160-175 psi. Sprayed brake cleaner in throttle body with throttle open; engine did not fire. Seems like no spark, but check showed OK. Maybe timing issue from a bad crank sensor? Its an interference motor so cam is prob OK.

I took it to a shop. The timing belt tensioner had gone bad and the belt slipped by 1 tooth. I never looked at the cam-to-crank timing 'cause I thought this was an interference engine and would have noticed internal damage. I wanted to report back so next time you guys can tell someone to check the cam/crank timing; it doesn't take long to check and if you already have spark, its worth checking for a bad running engine...
