When I was married we had various puppies and used various sources, depending on what we wanted. When my (now ex) was into racoon hunting, he used breeder magazines to get names of kennels. When he wanted a spaniel for upland game, he asked several of his hunting buddies who they went to and if they were happy with their choices. When we wanted just a nice, plain ordinary mutt for a housepet, we went to the humane shelter. I cannot count how many dogs we had throughout our 23 yr marriage but we used a variety of sources - from kennels to pet stores to giveaways in the newspaper. One of the best dogs we ever had was a mixed breed we got for nothing because the people were moving out of state. One of the worst dogs we ever got was through a breeder three states away. He lied about everything about the dog, all his papers were phony. Was supposed to be a trained hunting dog, that dog could not even find his food dish. That was really sad but a good learning experience for us.

Whatever source you use, ask for references from the seller, if they have sold other dogs and then contact those people. Things you would be interested in are the condition of the dog, if the shots were current, if the dog had been wormed, and if anything had gone wrong, how did they resolve it?

Good luck picking out your puppy and have fun!

When is a puppy not a puppy anymore? [ 3 Answers ]

Our Lhasa is now 10 months old. As a puppy we have had food available pretty much at all times, but maybe he's getting past that now, and for his weight should maybe only be fed about a cup to a cup and a half of his dog meal a day. We have been using Wysong, by the way, and it seems to have a...
