Replacing Main Sewer Line in Front Yard
We have dug all the way down to the pipe! Now we are ready to take out the old sewer line and put the new PVC line in.
Can someone explain how to work with the pitch of the pipe so that it is pitched properly?

My husband is certain the old pipe is made of concrete but I think it may be clay - it is very thin. We in in North Texas, not sure if there was a standard used when this house was built in the early 1960s.

Also, should we install cleanouts near the house and near the street? If near the street also, why?

Any suggestions on this topic greatly appreciated!

Pitch should be 1/4 inch per foot, but you can get away with 1/8 inch per foot for 4" pipe and larger. This is the standard everywhere. In my area, we install the cleanouts near the house, usually within 18 inches. Hope this helps

    Thanks for your quick reply!
Do you recommend a wye for cleanout or double cleanouts? Is it just a matter of personal preference?

Double cleanouts, both with wye fittings. The wyes should face each other so you can snake the drain from outside to street, and from outside to in the house. I prefer the two wye double cleanout over the actuall one fitting double cleanout, because when the sewer is backed up, with the single fitting double clean out, you can't be sure which way the snake will go when you drop it down the cleanout (cant see which direction the snake goes when the pipe is full of sewage). With two wye double clean out, you know for sure which way your going.
