I have a new mommy cat that just had her first litter of five. She laid on top of every one of the kittens and suffocated them. She would not even attempt to let them feed. I do not understand this. Any one have an idea as to why she would do this. She is an indoor cat and had her kittens in a chosen secure place. The kittens were unhandeled by anyone and our home is a quiet and calm environment. I am unsure whether to breed her again.

I certainly wouldn't breed her again and would get her spayed just because of the overpopulation of cats. What does your Vet say? Is she healthy?

Yes he said she is fine and that he had no explanation as to why she would kill them unless she just isn't the motherly type. I was just curious to see if any one else had an idea... Vets are like our doctors they know every thing and nothing at th

Some animals just aren't cut out to be mothers.

They don't always have 'maternal instincts', some would rather eat their young than care for it (be grateful she only sat on them)

I would be getting her desexed as Judy said, unless you like getting up every 2 hours to bottle feed kittens.
