    Replace and intall garbage disposal
My disposal just died with water and things in it and the water will not go down. Can I, a none plumbing person, replace and install this on my own? I have absolutely no knowledge of this type of matter other than sticking a broom handle down it did not work and I pushed the little button and it did not work either.

Before you replace it lets make sure it isn't simply jammed. Take the little wrench that came with it, slow S shaped allen wrench, insert it dead center from underneath. It should fit into a small hole. Move the wrench clockwise a few times and then counterclockwise a few more. Try your switch to see if it is unjammed. If not come back and I'll walk you through the replacement procedure. It is fairly easy and straight forward.

I'm a bit unclear as to whether you did get the disposal unjammed or not. You may have a bone frag or a dish fragment jamming the disposal so using a flash light to look down inside the thing look at the angle between the wall and the floor of the disposal and see if you can spot what the obstruction is, if you weren't able to unjam it. I found a loose screw jamming my disposal one time - once I got it out it ran fine.

My disposal has always worked just fine, but today it's sending water back up into the sink after it's gone down once the switch is turned off? A clog? Does this necessarily mean a plumbing call?

I have never had a problem running my garbage disposal before until I replaced it with a bigger and better one. Now my disposal backs up, and when I run the disposal, it backs up into the adjoining sink! Please help! Hi Mom, Sounds like you have a clog in the lateral, (horizontal ) pipe in...

Garbage disposal [ 5 Answers ]

I had a garbage disposal installed in my kitchen by a plumber. Sometime when we put garbage in and turn it on it shoots out the other drain and comes up into the other sink basin. My guess is that too much garbage is being put inthere at one time and shoots it across. Also, the instructions say to...
