Dealing with employee disrespect
Well, I just had an altercation with an employee where someone told one of my employee's that I said she was too faced (Not True). The employee then started yelling at me and told me that "this little supervisor job is going to my head" I told her that I do not believe in hearsay and if it is true then she should bring the person to me and the three of us can talk about it or get that person to put it in writing. She refused and told me that I have no class blah blah blah.
I then told the employee that if she does what I ask we can all talk about this if not then there is nothing further to discuss and politely asked her to leave my office. She refused. I got up from behind my desk and motioned with my hand and asked her again to leave my office. She stated " Push me out Push me out I would like to see you try to get me out of your office" She refused so I picked up my company phone and left her there.
I soon realized that I had left my wallet so I went back in and she was still yelling when I went back in. I went into my office and closed the door. She came back around and stopped the door from closing. I then pushed my door shut. She then began to bang on the door and call me a *****."i know so much personal **** about you that you don't want to get out!!" Yelling. I did not respond, I grabbed my wallet and left. I then called my manager to inform him what had happened. It was about 5pm when this had happened.
I want to know what are the next steps to take. This behaviour is uncalled for and I want to know what kind of disciplinary actions I should take. My boss has no balls so he will probably not do anything and he is very close with this employee. HELP ME!

How long have you been a supervisor? (Is there a big age difference between you and the rest of the staff?) Have you experienced any insubordination before this incident? If so, what were the "complaints" by employees?

I have worked there for 9 years but have been a supervisor for over 2 years. The employee I had this problem with is 57 and I am 31. The ages in our department vary from 20 to 59 years old. Ihave not really experienced insubordination from this employee before. There is one male that she is very close to and there were rumors that she pushes staff to act out against management.

Since you haven't had problems before with this employee, can you let this incident slide? Because of her age difference, she feels superior to you and probably very much resents your being her office supervisor.
Is there some way to begin to kill her with kindness and value her? -- not to let her get away with stuff, but to improve the relationship between you, showing her that you value good things she does (she MUST do SOMEthing right?? )?

Regardless of age differences, she was totally disrepectful.
Your Human Resources Dept. should be able to tell you what steps you have in place to take care of employees who are disrepectful.
With the company I worked for, we first had to give a verbal warning to the person, then if it happened again within 6 months they were given a written warning, then if it happened again they were given 3 unpaid days off work to think about whether they really wanted to work there. If it happened again, they were automatically fired.
Of course everything had to be documented and documentation was maintained by the Human Resources Dept.
