My Moen bathtub faucet won't get hot. Do I need to replace the cartridge?
I'm totally stumped... I have a single handle Moen bathtub faucet that was installed new in 2006. The handle faces down, and rotates counter-clockwise, but even when it's all the way on, it won't get hot. Also, I took the whole handle-assembly apart looking for a cartridge, thinking this was the problem. I couldn't find the cartridge, but I did try twisting the metal stub with pliers in a 360 degree circle, testing the water the whole way around - it never got hot. Any ideas what I need to do? Thanks for any help!!

    Hi SE22474

Installed in 2006... right? If so, tell me, did it ever get hot water or is this a new issue? If not, did it ever get warm water?

Also, can you tell us the exact model moen valve?

    Back to you...

    Hi Mark,

I actually bought this house a year ago as a foreclosure, and I'm not sure what the history of it is. However, it's never been hot since I've moved in. I looked all over it and couldn't find a model #. Is there a place internally that specifies? It looks a lot like this one, with just a slightly more teardrop looking handle

    http://www.edeallever.info/product-588975_Moen-T2442-ChromePolished-Brass-Monticello-Trim-Kit-for-Posi---Temp-Pressure-Balancing-Valve-Lever-Handle---T2442.html

Holding my hand under the water in the hot position, it gets ever so slightly luke-warm after a few seconds, and will revert back to room temperature again. It never gets anywhere close to resembling "hot" water, though. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise, Mark, and let me know if I need to be more specific.

    Hi Sam...

I suspect that your valve may have a temperature limiting device that needs to be set to properly regulate the shower temperature. Look under the handle for something with geared teeth and see if you can adjust this to increase the temperature.

If you have difficulty try removing the adjustable ring... should allow you to turn shower on to full hot. If you have kids this ring will need to go back in, but for now just confirm full hot is achieved and get back to us, OK?

If you can't find anything that allows adjustability then you may need to replace the entire stem assembly (free via 1800buymoen)

Let us know what you find...

PS: I couldn't get to the linked faucet you posted, but try what I mention above and see what you find.

    Mark,

Thanks for the advice! I found that white plastic piece with the geared teeth and played around with it a little, but I still couldn't get hot water to come out. The water will flow for about 270 degrees of the handle rotation (without that piece in place) and at none of these points does the water get hot, or even change temperature.

Do you think I need that new handle assembly?

If you can't get any hot water then the next thing to try would be to remove the cartridge assembly (shut water and lift the copper clip out) and rotate the cartridge 180 degrees, then reassemble and try this out again.

If that fails to restore your hot water to full call 1800 BUYMOEN and ask them to send you a new cartridge assembly. They should send it at no charge.. including shipping!

Check out this video if you need to rotate or replace the cartridge. If it turns out to be tougher than presented in the video that is because removal of the cartridge can be tough. They sell a MOEN cartridge puller at all home improvement stores that I know of, if needed.

    Mark,

That's what it took! That video worked great, and I yanked the old one out, replaced it, and now it works perfectly. Can't thank you enough man!
