Hi.

I'm a new home owner and an idiot. I discovered that our toilet on the first floor (no basement) was rocking back and forth, and upon attempting to tighten down bolts, further discovered that they spun freely. I removed the toilet to find that both slots of the pvc mount were broken. Instead of running out to buy a repair kit (which I later discovered had been done with a small degree of success by the previous owner), I began tearing up and breaking off the mount (man those shards of pvc can really smart when they snap off). Now I am left with what remains of the closet bend and no way to get it out and a new one in. I have broken the mount off cleanly. Is there any sort of pvc adapter for this situation? Could I just grind/cut out some of the bend and install a whole new mount? If so, how do I?

Check your hardware store and home centers and see if they have just a flange. You may be able to grind what is left to fit it, glue it on and reset the toilet. Shim it so it sets solid before tightening the bolts.

If you have cleared the flange and closet bend to floor level you still have options. You didn't say so I'm going to assume that the closet bend is 4".
(1) If you have space around the outside of the floor level stub up you may glue in a deep flange. A deep flange consists of a standard flange with a 1 to 3" collar that extends down over the closet bend below the floor line. Or--
(2) If there's not enough space to install a outside flange you could glue in a inside flange that slides inside the 4" stub up.
This is a one shot deal. Make very certain that the flange is positioned correctly when you glue. (Don't forget the primer) Mess this up and you're looking at taking up the cement and replacing the closet bend. If the toilet rocks and you need instructions on how to shim it level click on back and we'll help. NOTE: If the bowl rocks overtightening the closet bolts WILL NOT level it. You will only break the flange slots out.

They sell flange adapters that fit inside the pipe that don't require cement. They are made by plumbest company plumbest.com. See below:

The one you need is on the bottom. They sell it at Lowe's. Since it is only a rubber gasket you may want to anchor it before you drop the toilet on it.

If you have to shim the toilet they also sell plastic shims...
