    It's not a case that I believe it's tax free, I was enquiring. May I assume this is not the case? The other reason I ask, the jeweller I bought my jewellery from informed me that I could claim it back but I didn't see any tax officer at the airport

    I would. We DO have others here who are MORE expert at taxes than I am. They might have some different information.

    There are a couple of states that offer sales tax reates to foreign visitors - Louisiana and Texas come to mind - but most states (including New York) do not. And in any event these states reqiure that you submit your rebate ckaim before departing the state. One option that you might have considered is having the items shipped to you - they don't collect sales tax on items shipped out of state (unless the store has a physical presence in the state that it's being shipped to).
