Are we assuming it was painted in 1959 or is it older? What about the style and subject matter?

The only painter that comes to mind off-hand is Richard Oelze, the German painter. (1900-1980) He was mainly known for surrealist landscapes. Maybe Google him and see if the painting looks anything like his work.

If not, more info might help. Of course it could be by a relatively unknown artist which would make it very hard to find out.

Thank you SO much for responding to me. The large oil is almost "post impressionist" in feeling... bright colors, an off-hand charm, an interior, charming bedroom *** sitting room/studio.. I assume it was painted in 1959... I will look at the work of Richard Oelze and, if any other ideas occfdur to you, please do email me back at [email protected] or through this website... Many thanks again!

Definitely not oelze... I'm quite awful with a digital camera but I'll try to photograph it... if I were to hazard a guess I thik it might be French, or European...

I'm not an expert but I gather an artist's monogram is often not their initials, though it can be. I started with thinking of initials of Artists that would have been working in that period that came to mind and could only think of the one. Often RO would be a surname starting with those two letters, pretty sure Ione Robinson used RO. So again I was trying to think of surnames that seemed to fit the period.

Charles E D Roderick is vaguely possible but his style is more impressionist that post impressionist and I think he mainly did landscapes. Will try and think of more...

Just to add, and to complicate matters, artists have been known to use rather odd seeming rationales for how they sign their paintings, and to alter this from time to time. I gather Rembrandt used: R, RH, RHL-van Rijn, Rembrant, and Rembrandt. He never used RO '59 as far as I know though :P.
