My tub drain has been standing stagnant for 24 hours... Help!!
    Allo!

My tub became very suddenly clogged (I took a shower in the morning and water was disappearing down the drain without pausing at all. That night it suddenly became STOPPED when I was cleaning it with baking soda and vinegar!! ) Almost immediately the water started backing up into it from my bathroom sink too.

The building is very very old. And my bathtub does not have an overflow hole or a stopper in the bath itself, the stopper is a tall, separate pipe as tall as the bath and next to it, about 2 inches away from it's wall. The inside of the tub is just a large solid white bucket with only a very small drain pipe at the bottom of it. There are separate fixtures for shower and bath spigots and each has separate hot/cold.so I realize drano is a bad idea. As soon as I started plunging, water started gurgling back into the bathtub (not out of it). And then when I washed my hands the water from the sink rushed back up the bath drain.

So I tried snaking from the stopper drain. But the snake bends 90• to the left at floor level and abruptly stops right around wherethe tub drain is.

So I stopped up my tub drain, weighted the rubber stopper, put some hot water down the sink in hopes it would attack the clog from the other side. Nothing.

I put some vinegar and baking soda in the sink and in the tub and waited over night. Plunged again. This time dark brown water is coming up my drain pipe and is sitting in my tub. I plunged and plunged to no avail (and, yes, I know how to plunge properly!). Tried snaking again in vain. Tried twisting-about a coat hanger. Nothing. Tried some bleach to see if it would break up some body grease and soap scum. Nothing!!

It is totally stagnant after hours and hours (about 24) of being totally still (save the added water flowing back into it from the sink)!

I cannot see a trap anywhere in the floor of the bathroom, so I've no idea how to tell if I have a drum trap or not.

Landlord is gone for a long holiday weekend and I seem to be at a loss! I've made absolutely no progress no matter how much elbow grease I've applied repeatedly!

Ive continued trying to pour very hot water into the sink in effort to try and loosen. Have plunged sink and tub with overflow holes/stopper pipe sealed off. Have snaked (but haven't been able to get more than 2' into the drain, and not "down").

What do I do? This is awwwwwfffuullll!! Never had a clog this bad! Landlord is a total tool (and is gone anyway)so I would love to fix it myself. Hellllpppppp!

Thanks for any advice and encouragement in advance, guys ;-)

If you can not get the stopper apart to get a snake past then you can snake from the lavatory roof vent. Put out enough snake to reach the base and about 18 feet more. Good luck, Tom

Standing Shower Drain Leaks [ 3 Answers ]

Hi: I read few articles about how to fix the shower drain leaks. I guess some experts suggested to use WingTite. I think the rubber gasket and the threaded top cover is what is causing the leak. The threaded holder seems a bit bigger than the hole of the shower drain itself and I don't know how...
