    Living in NY State, especially NYC can be expensive taxwise. But salaries are generally higher because of that. You don't have to live in the city.

    The NY State tax is about 6.85%, and the NY City resident tax rate is about an additional 3.6%. You only have to pay the NYC resident tax if you live in the city (or Yonkers) - that's one reason why a lot of people commute.
