How fast would car in front have to be going for me to be traveling 65MPH or 78MPH?
Stopped for speeding (I was) police said I was going 78 (I know I was going 65MPH) There was a car ahead of me that I had been following for 3 miles with no distance changes between the two vehicles. I want to know how fast the lead car would have to be going for me to be going the speed that I was going .

Let's see - you were travelling whatever speed it was (let's say 78 for the sake of argument) and the car ahead of you remained the same distance from you all the time.

The car ahead of you was traveling the same speed you were traveling.

It's a rather simple conclusion - if you were going slower the other car would have pulled away; if you were going faster the distance between you would have closed.

I don't understand what I think is going to be your legal argument - you were both traveling 78 and the Police stopped only you for whatever reason. Is that your reasoning?

(I'm a liability investigator, by the way, and I've heard this argument before. Problem is you can't locate the car in front of you and you have no way of proving your version of the events.)

If there was no distance change between the two vehicles, both of you were traveling at the same speed, either 65 or 78.

Sounds like the other car would be doing 78 by the police's radar iof they had it on him. Not sure what your point is but I'd think twice before going to court with this approach. Most judges get this point real quick, two wrongs do not make one right.
