Hello. We just got back from a week's vacation last night. The house felt cool and normal.

Then today we just noticed the A/C unit was not blowing cold air into the house. The inside fan is hardly blowing.

The outside unit is running.

There is a small copper pipe running into the furnace/fan unit and an insulated pipe. The larger insulated pipe feels cold and the smaller copper pipe feels warm/hot.

I changed the filter. I also went up in the attic and made sure the ducting was connected.

The fan blows both when switched to ON and AUTO but the force is very low. I barely feel it at the vents.

I opened the panel and held down the safety switch and the fan is blowing. When all closed up the intake vents hardly show any flow.

What can this be? The unit is maybe around 10 years old. Tempstar NNE075F16G1.

Okay so I got a technician out.

The evaporator was frozen up and blocking the airflow.

The fan relay was stuck so the fan would not kick on. I think he said it was the high speed that was not working.

He claims it all started with the dirty filter.

Supposedly the filter being dirty caused the relay to overheat and stick and this stopped the fan from working. This led to the evaporator unit freezing up because the fan was not moving the cold air out of the forced air unit, or furnace... whatever it is called, and so the evaporator froze.

He ran the heater for a minute and got the melting process started. Water started going everywhere, turns out the overflow pipe was blocked. So he cut that and blew compressed air through the pipe and cleared the blockage.

So now we are running on fan only to give the unit time to completely melt off. We were told about 2 hours in this weather and we should be fine to run the A/C again.

He said we will have to see how the relay does, he thinks after tapping on it and getting the fan going again that it might last a while. He said if not we have no choice but to replace the circuit board at over $300 and it will be hard to get... a few days perhaps.

Okay so how bad did I get taken? LOL!

I am guessing that a relay is possible to get and solder in to the PC board and save a bundle? Could the dirty filter cause the relay to fail?

Well, it was the weekend... so I expected to pay more.
