Sound funny , but been hearing lot about big head requirement for rottys

And came across many breeders boasting about very big head of their rotty puppy, but lacking overalll perfection and angulation.

And even seen many rotty puppys with hound type long muzzle !
More of a look of doberman :-P

The head size is purely a Genetical factor.

But do any one have a Standard Size requirement for rotty male

As much as I have is 2:3 proportion of muzzle length to back skull size.

Like height 25 inch etc.. Do any specific size or how to make sure your puppy head size is as per standard ?

Like topline it is said we can have a idea at 8 weeks and then you able to see back the same after 8 months... Do any age at which it shows how the head size growing to be ?

Lot many questions ? :-D I am confused to see lot of breeders boasting about big head.. but what's head size is a good head size. :-D

the standards which ever I had referred give maximum that 2:3 propertion of muzzle to backskull.

Let me be more precise
for a rotty of 27 inch height, 110 lbs what's the backskull size to be ? In inches ?

everywhere its more described as zygomatic arch etc.. But what's the measurable acceptable value ? No answer I could found

To add on.. even a small head of adult rotty can be as per the zygomatic arch concept and within that 2:3 ratio of muzzle and backskull etc.

Like we have weight in lbs, height in inches. Do there any specific measurements in inches for acceptable within standard backskull size for rottys

There really isn't an exact size they should be other than the ratio. Their height can range from 22 to 27 inches so the head size will change depensing on how large the dog is.

They are a 'compact and powerful' dog as stated in the standard but different breeders will havea different interpretation of what this means.
That's where you start getting into breed type... breed type is basically a breeders interpretation.
Chinese Cresteds are a good example as there are 2 distinct types within the breed, yet neither is wrong by the standard. One type is very fine boned and 'pretty' whereas the other type is a lot heavier and cobbier.

But still for somebody to judge is their puppy head is as per standard (as puppy head perfectness differ from people to people) :confused:

That's why I gave the example of a rotty with 25 inch height and the weight.. ;)
Any one have an idea what is the back skull size of the current champ Aston junipera?

The muzzle to backskull ratio can be measure.. but again a puppy with small head can even fit into that ratio concept.:p

Even some with big backskull but then with long muzzle :p

Breeders learn how their lines change as they grow. A puppy might have a muzzle that is too short but the breeder knows that at around 10 weeks they have a growth spurt and it lengthens. They might be too long as puppies but their height catches up as they grow... give me a litter of puppies and I wouldn't be able to pick a winner out of them unless I knew how they grew.

When my pup came his tail was too tight, they are supposed to be fairly straight but his curled over his back.
With just about every other dog the tail usually gets worse as they get older... but not with this breeders. She knew it would get better and wasn't worried about it... now his tail isn't a problem.
Any other breeder would have sold him as a pet probably, but he made it into the 'show cut' because she knew how her dogs changed and grew.

Can't help you with Astons head size sorry, I'll ask my mum about them, she had a show Rottie years ago (gosh, nearly 20 years now) and bred a litter, I'll get her opinion.

That is the point of the standard only having a ratio. Would you judge an animal by the length of its ears? Its tongue? Its teeth? A proportional head is the standard, in Rotties you even have the proportional ratio, unlike a lot of breeds.

Another reason for having only a ratio is the different units of measure. Is a dog perfect in inches but not quite perfect in centimeters? With just the ratio to judge by that question is moot.

The reason for this question itself is because I had came across so many breeders boasting their rottys big head :p

Some have big head compared to their body projecting out

That put my inquisitiveness to know actually what you can call a big head.
As a big head rottweiler more than its overall structure will have its own problems too

A bigger head doest mean a better rotty is the point I want to make sure and no such specific measurable sizes before reaching to a conclusion.


Some more questions which is pending to be answered is

Like top line at 8 weeks gives us a glimpse of what his topline will be after 8 months, do have any such age period for head size?

At what age do the head stoppign growing ?
I had heard that puppy heads get first longer till 8 months and after it start getting broader ? Any update or any one can throw light on that too

These I'm afraid you'll have to talk to specific breeders that you trust. I do not have enough experience with the breed to be able to answer questions about physical development.

Your dog will stop growing up at about 8 months.. From 8 months to probably close to 2 yrs of age, your dog will be growing out (getting bulk and muscle mass).

Breeders have signatures.. Some breeders will breed for temperament, some will for trainability, others for size, weight, jaw size and head size.

Rotties are bully breeds.. They are bred for massive heads and strong jaws. These guys have the biggest and baddest bite in the dog world.. I think they beat out the GSD by a small percentage.

If you are worried about head size, then you needs to speak with the professionals. If you cannot follow breed standard and what is accepted by the kennel clubs, then your question will never be answered. Breed standard is breed standard. Your dog is either apart of it or it isn't. Breeders breed for breed standard.

Speak to a breeder who breeds for the breed standard for your kennel club. They will be able to educate you on what is accepted and what isn't.
