Help,

We are getting visited by larger and larger crowds of ducks that habitate on our street.

What is decent food for ducks. All we have been giving them is bread that is getting old.

Is there a specific feed for wild ducks?

If you are referring to Canada Geese which are a major niusence around here, Filty and cause lots of damage and adverse health problems due to large emissions of crap everywhere. THose should not be fed. Wild Ducks would find their own food. Otherwise you might encourage them to stay beyond the time they should migrate that can put their lives at risk.

White bread and sugary cereal hold no nutrition for wild birds. If you live to a feed store, they usually carry wild duck seed, but if not bring healthy leftovers. Wheat bread, cereals with lots of grains, and leftover bugs and worms (usually left over from feeding the fish) are good options that are healthier for the ducks then junk foods.

You can also get some cracked corn. This can be purchased any where they sell animal feed and can be very inexpensive.

Now here's a big butt. In my town it's actually illegal to feed the ducks and geese. The problem is, they don't leave when winter months come. Remember if you start feeding, be prepared to be feeding them ALL the time, including months when they should be in warmer states (not sure where you live).

Make sure to check out your local by laws to make sure this is something that is not prohibited. Once you start, they will NOT leave easily.

I do not think these ducks migrate from here. One of the neighbors across the street appears to be their home ground. And they wonder wherever they feel like. Of course we have only lived in our home for a year now.

We are in the far South East corner in Virginia so it is a relative mild winter here.

Good point, I live and grew up far enough north where all ducks except those on a farm are migratory. And here would not likely survive the winter without human assistance if they never left. That might not be the case in the warmer climates.
